As much as this vacation was unplanned, hopefully you've found some time to enjoy yourself this weekend as you've settled in. The idyllic beach, all inclusive food, drink, and shopping might be almost enough to distract you from that pesky talk of sacrifice. Vacations really are about letting your worries pass you by. Hopefully you've found the time to set up your U-PINION too, because if you haven't, it's been chirping incessantly since the date turned to Monday. And come Monday at noon, everyone's device will let out a pleasant jingle, heralding several announcements across the screen:

Happy Monday! We've hope you've been enjoying your time at Sungem's Peak. The Mermer (intranet) is now fully operational. Chat with your friends and get recommendations for how to best enjoy your vacation, by:

The artificial peppiness of the announcement just oozes out from the U-PINION, and soon thereafter everyone will be accosted by a friendly robot that forces a physical copy of the rules into their hands anyway. Just in case. They'll also present a copy of the tasks this week as well, for any interested parties.

Nah, not really. I’m older than him anyways, so there’s nothing to be afraid about.

Though he was always into playing roughly. He’d dig holes for me to fall into or he would beat me up with a shovel whenever he got mad, but he’s a nice kid underneath that grumpy exterior!

By the way... [She laces her fingers together.] Someone losing so much of their minds that they cease to see reality is also a frightening end.

I was. I'm a third generation Coordinator, to be precise. First generation coordinators are altered in the embryonic state before being implanted back into their mother. If two coordinators have a child, they pass their enhancements on to that kid. But with every new generation of Coordinators, the fertility rate declines.

Which is why the PLANTs, my home country, regulate marriages so that only two people who are viable for reproduction can become spouses.

[ She keeps a close eye on his reactions. How does this all sound to somebody who has never heard of the concept before? She hasn't had the privilege of seeing that before. ]

He's my friend who sticks with me through thick and thin. I can tell him anything and together with him and his siblings, I can play lots of games in the garden. Mr. Pink is quite the mischievous one though.

[It's a lovely morning on the isle of Sungem's Peak, and you are one of its resident prisoner-vacationers! Rise and shine. ☆

You'll notice things are a tad different today: the sea breeze seems to have calmed considerably -- perhaps a little too much -- and there's nary a note of birdsong to be found. In fact, are there less birds today? Nothing shuffles on the beach except the tide, and there's a funny sense of pressure lying over the entire island. Those more in tune with nature, along with pets and organic companions, will feel a distinct sense of malaise throughout the day.

Like the calm before a storm, or rather, with the low sigh of the sea: like something larger lying in wait, breathing down the entire island's collective necks.]

While it would be nice to think that "deepening bonds" would prevent any killings from taking place, I suspect that those most likely to act are not so easily swayed by friendship.
