As much as this vacation was unplanned, hopefully you've found some time to enjoy yourself this weekend as you've settled in. The idyllic beach, all inclusive food, drink, and shopping might be almost enough to distract you from that pesky talk of sacrifice. Vacations really are about letting your worries pass you by. Hopefully you've found the time to set up your U-PINION too, because if you haven't, it's been chirping incessantly since the date turned to Monday. And come Monday at noon, everyone's device will let out a pleasant jingle, heralding several announcements across the screen:

Happy Monday! We've hope you've been enjoying your time at Sungem's Peak. The Mermer (intranet) is now fully operational. Chat with your friends and get recommendations for how to best enjoy your vacation, by:

• Asking honest questions via our anonymous poll system

The artificial peppiness of the announcement just oozes out from the U-PINION, and soon thereafter everyone will be accosted by a friendly robot that forces a physical copy of the rules into their hands anyway. Just in case. They'll also present a copy of the tasks this week as well, for any interested parties.

So you're an only child?

I am. Having siblings sounds quite fun, but not a lot of children are born in my country as is.

You can see on my profile that I'm a Coordinator, right? A side effect of the genetic enhancement is reduced fertility. I live in a country that is populated only by Coordinators, so it's a national crisis.

I thought it was a job position…so you didn’t have a choice? Were you born as one?

I was. I'm a third generation Coordinator, to be precise. First generation coordinators are altered in the embryonic state before being implanted back into their mother. If two coordinators have a child, they pass their enhancements on to that kid. But with every new generation of Coordinators, the fertility rate declines.

Which is why the PLANTs, my home country, regulate marriages so that only two people who are viable for reproduction can become spouses.

[ She keeps a close eye on his reactions. How does this all sound to somebody who has never heard of the concept before? She hasn't had the privilege of seeing that before. ]

[ truthfully speaking, crea has a hard time understanding a lot of the nitty gritty, but he gets enough to know that such a thing feels… unfair to him, to say the least. like an experiment that she didn’t consent to.

So basically your parents could only have you. [ a beat. ] What are all those enhancements for anyway?

First generation Coordinators were often enhanced to the more specific wishes of their parents, and it caused a lot of grief, but I wasn't born with any specific goal in mind.

I don't get sick, and I can pick up skills of physical and mental kind faster than most Naturals could? But I still have my own talents and weaknesses, like everyone else. There are those who believe Coordinators to be a new evolved species, but I disagree.

We're just people.

Well… I thought that’d be obvious. Of course you’re still people.

[ even if she’s genetically modified and enhanced, it doesn’t mean that she’s any less human. ]

But I guess… siblings don’t have to be blood related. Maybe you could find someone like that, too.

I do have people I am as close to as family - even if I would not call them brothers or sisters, I think I am quite content with the situation.
