WEEK FIVE

21 Vacationers

The weekend sure was something, wasn't it? Tempers flared, explosions burst, and some were treated to an immersive sand bath experience. Come Monday at least, things seem quieter though not in the unnatural still way—the distortions on the islands have receded sometime in the night (with some impressive firework-like booms that may have stirred your sleep, at that; and the waves seem a little higher this morning) and the various amenities on the island have been made orderly again. Though, as always, some traces remain in the landscape; the waterfall looks like it has seen better days, though it's no longer in danger of coughing up debris on your head if looked at wrong.

This week like the rest brings new locations for you to explore, on Kakapo's Nest though it seems like only one of them really fits the vacation vibe. Hope you like snow!

[Shuda's been largely absent from the cabana this week, and even more reticent than usual when he's been there. Not that he suspects this has bothered his cabanamates in the slightest when they're all the "keep to themselves" sort, but it's still enough to be noticeable.

He's not exactly chatty when he shows up at the bar, either; he just takes a seat and watches Zelkov working his magic with the refreshers rather than asking for anything for himself. Until he gets interrupted by what he quickly realizes are some of Zelkov's memories, that is, and his eye opens slightly as he watches them play out in his mind. Even though this isn't the first time this week this has happened, it's still a bit of a disconcerting thing to experience, and it takes him a moment to gather his own thoughts once it's over.

At last, he breaks the silence.]

Do you regret any of it?

[ he's just gone back to juicing fruit already. ]

...Some of it. Unlike her, I did choose that path for myself, and am fully responsible for all of my own actions.

[That gets a slight smile tugging at the corner of his lips.]

Seems like that's the case for most of us here. Makes you wonder if that's just a coincidence, or if this place has its own way of choosing who gets brought here.

There do seem to be quite a few recurring themes among us.

Maybe you can call it team spirit. Surprised they didn't give us themed t-shirts, honestly.

I believe the gift shop might have had that covered if it was something we had wanted for ourselves.

[Says the man who absolutely did not appropriate a couple of Hawaiian shirts for himself. Shh, you saw nothing in the closet.

Too bad that this week's funky weather is intent on shaming him in a very different fashion right about now.]

... heh. It would pick now to do that.

[But if he's especially upset by the memory it chose to display, it doesn't really show on his face. It's not one of his finer moments, though.]

So was this grudge simply a matter of pride?

In a sense.

[The look on his face now is a wry one.]

I wanted strength, and I thought that was the way to achieve it. Haru taught me otherwise.

Like you, it was a path I chose for myself. I'm not proud of it, but I can't say I regret all of it, either.

...That is not a mindset to which I have ever been able to relate.

[ he doesn't like fighting and really doesn't care at all about strength, so long as he has enough to carry out his duties effectively. that way of thinking is much more kagetsu's thing than his. ]

But if you have been able to use it as a stepping stone toward becoming the person you want to be, then I'm glad that has been the case.

You're giving me too much credit-- I'm not there yet.

[Not until he surpasses Gale. Until he carries out the promise he made, he can't truly say he's done that.]

But maybe it's for the best that you can't relate. It takes all kinds, after all. Someone needs to be the voice of reason for the rest of us.

Hmm, did you ever figure out why you collected balls of lint?

I cannot say that I did... though perhaps it is simply that there is something rewarding about the snowball effect as you gather more together.

So something like a numbers game, except tactile? I'm not sure if I'd do that with lint, but when you put it like that, I can understand the appeal. It's nice to see something grow.

Yes, I suppose so.

...In any case, that collection was not part of a pursuit so much as a bit of an odd compulsion.
