TRIAL

Whether you investigated or decided to take it easy, before you know it the speakers crackle to life instructing you to head to the beach. This is a demand not a request, and anyone who doesn't comply will find themselves forcibly moved there by the kitty bots—even if it takes a whole swarm of them.

Once you get there, you'll see that this isn't quite a beach party, instead a gigantic sandbar dotted with some type of constructs has risen out of the sea and tides. The path to the sandbar is solid enough even if it is relatively narrow, and once you arrive you'll find that you're far out in the ocean, way farther than it's comfortable to swim.

And once everyone is gathered, the pathway recedes back into the sea leaving you trapped here, all twenty-eight of you. At least there's ample seating, a kind of amphitheater made of sand with space in the middle for grandstanding or dramatic revelations. Though the area is mostly open, there are lone pieces of sand wall around the edges, maybe to dissuade you from tossing someone into the ocean without stopping you entirely. Thankfully, a lone outhouse rests again one of the walls just in case you need to use the bathroom, though it's not much in the way of actual privacy.

Settle in, get comfortable or just complain about all the sand you'll be tracking back, if you make it back that is. There's still another sacrifice to be chosen after all according to your administrators and—

Maybe you've noticed there's no palm trees or speakers here? It's just you, and the sand. For now.

Her own devices. She was there before we fell asleep, but I had no reason to keep a close eye on her.

I did notice Chai playing a bunch of video games intently during the hour before we fell asleep. Pretty sure we'd have noticed if he spilled anything then though.

If I've the right of things and he didn't spill his drink before you were unconscious, then he perhaps...

Was playing his games, saw that you had all fallen asleep inexplicably, dropped his drink in surprise, and then...fetched another?

Hmm... Chai might've been startled by something he wasn't expecting to hear? He didn't strike me as very coordinated. But I can see him leisurely going outside if he heard something that caught his attention that didn't necessarily scream danger.

Same here. The guy had like no survival senses, from what I could tell. We only talked once, but it took him way too long to realize he was kidnapped to here.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was why he was lured out.

Something outside from the location of the go-karts, perhaps? In that case he might have simply been looking for anyone else who was awake.

Like, after he got his scores and realized everyone else in the arcade was asleep, he went lookin'? That would make sense.

Yes, or if there was a noise from outside, perhaps from whatever sabotage was done to the device.

I'd be traveling a bit more than leisurely toward something like that, though.

Yeah...honestly, I think how he went outside, or was lured out, doesn't matter too much. We can only speculate as to that, where we should maybe be tryin' to pin concrete shit to people.

It would only matter, I suppose, if someone in the arcade with him was also responsible for his murder. I thought that might be the case at first, given how calmly he seems to have walked away.

[She sounds less certain, now.]

I guess it could still be the case, if they like...walked with him...? If you were with someone, I guess you'd be calm.
