TRIAL

Whether you investigated or decided to take it easy, before you know it the speakers crackle to life instructing you to head to the beach. This is a demand not a request, and anyone who doesn't comply will find themselves forcibly moved there by the kitty bots—even if it takes a whole swarm of them.

Once you get there, you'll see that this isn't quite a beach party, instead a gigantic sandbar dotted with some type of constructs has risen out of the sea and tides. The path to the sandbar is solid enough even if it is relatively narrow, and once you arrive you'll find that you're far out in the ocean, way farther than it's comfortable to swim.

And once everyone is gathered, the pathway recedes back into the sea leaving you trapped here, all twenty-eight of you. At least there's ample seating, a kind of amphitheater made of sand with space in the middle for grandstanding or dramatic revelations. Though the area is mostly open, there are lone pieces of sand wall around the edges, maybe to dissuade you from tossing someone into the ocean without stopping you entirely. Thankfully, a lone outhouse rests again one of the walls just in case you need to use the bathroom, though it's not much in the way of actual privacy.

Settle in, get comfortable or just complain about all the sand you'll be tracking back, if you make it back that is. There's still another sacrifice to be chosen after all according to your administrators and—

Maybe you've noticed there's no palm trees or speakers here? It's just you, and the sand. For now.

[Now that she's had some time to answer questions following the line of inquiry into her chemistry... It's not just the molten sugar that seems so curious about the weapon, here.]

A shame the sugar shattered, so we can't see what was made... If that's really what forged the blade, we'd better turn our attention to the hows as well.

They would have either needed a mold or some other knowledge of weaponsmithing, unless they were very talented at sculpture from memory.

I am inclined to agree, which means we are potentially looking at an individual with this sort of technological knowledge, and craftsmanship. And, given the leisurely pace of the footprints, someone that Chai did not feel threatened by, assuming those are his.

Could it have been someone who was already at the arcade with him? That wouldn't have caused any alarm.

Though I can't say I'd know when they'd have time to do all this preparation, in that case.

It could have been while he was trying to get all of his high scores, if it was someone in the arcade.

It might not be a bad idea to get a sense of how they spent their time before everyone fell asleep. Shall we ask?

I do have a glob of it that came off on a tree. They may have been testing it there originally. It was large enough to make quite the indent, so similar to a regular sword's blade.

I suspect it might have been a harpoon, if the edges of the wound were jagged... there are a lot of them on the island now.

I still wouldn't rule a sword out, either. Especially if the less clean work could be attributed something to else.

It would be easy to make a mold for one. Might even be why there was a lot of broken sugar glass along the rail line. They may have poured the sugar there.

It would be difficult for a sword to make a jagged wound like that unless its owner didn't take care of the blade.
